Previously, we had floppy disks that can store just few MBs of data in them but currently we are enjoying the services of disk drives with the capability of storing several terabytes.

Now IBM has introduced a magnetic tape that can store 330 terabytes of data. The new storage technology enabled the tech giant to get the data recording density of 201 gigabytes per square inch. As compared to conventional tape drives, this is 13 times extra.

This huge magnetic tape was announced during 28th Magnetic Recording Conference in Japan on 2nd August 2017 while it was developed with the collaboration with Sony Storage Media Solutions.

Magnetic tapes used initially in the 1950s but IBM claims that this old medium will stay for more than a decade due to the increased density of its latest release by the company.

IBM also told that several new technologies emerged due to this partnership which includes more reliable tapes due to better lubricant technology used in these tapes while longer sputtered tape is made with the introduction of advanced ‘roll to roll’ fabrication technology.

Normal magnetic tapes are used for recording large amount of data for less frequent access like media archives, medical records and documents in large corporations.

But increase in reliability and density of these tapes can make them suitable for cloud services also. The best part is that the price of these tapes is just slightly more than the conventional tapes.
