Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) implemented the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) to monitor the mobile devices over the country to reduce the security threats and revenue loss to the government of Pakistan produced due to non standard and non compliant devices. The PTA has blocked 50 million phones since January 2019. After implementing DIRBS, mobile broadband (BB) penetration has increased from 51.8 million subscribers in January 2018 to 76.8 million in November 2019 showing an increase of 25 million due to increased usage of smartphones. The total cellular mobile subscribers reached 165.4 million by the end of November 2019.

According to the regulations, the PTA has registered all devices which were operated on different operator networks. The mobile which don’t have IMEI numbers were rwegisterd on the mobile number of the user. The Federal Board of Revenue FBR imposed the duties and taxes on Mobiles. The FBR collected over Rs. 11 billion during the whole period. The PTA advised the public through print, electronic & social media and SMS to purchase on PTA approved devices by checking IMEI. The PTA has also provided a facility to public to check the mobile status through official Website and SMS to 8484.
