Google will help Samsung’s defense in its trial against Apple

In the ongoing currently trial against Apple, Samsung’s legal defense will be aided by Google as it is an obligation due to a contract between these two tech giants. This arrangement was revealed by a Google lawyer who during the currently going trial testified this.

Due to this agreement, some of patent infringement claims of Apple will be taken over the defense by Google. In case Samsung loses on those particular claims, Google will also compensate Samsung.

This move by Google is not a surprise. Most of the trial is about Android and its functionality, although the company is not directly named in the lawsuit of Apple. In order to testify that Android was developed independently from iOS, top engineers of Google have been summoned already.

In the trial, Google will cover patents ‘959 and ‘414. They are about universal search and background synchronization respectively. Apple has asked Samsung for more than $2 billion in damages after sue for the infringement of five patents.

Samsung became an easier legal target in this trial though allegedly it’s Android OS of Google which infringes the patents given above. Google indirectly make money from services and ads after distributing free OS, while Samsung made hefty profits from the selling of Android devices.
