Shoe-Sized Internet Box from Facebook for 1500 People Within 10 KM

Facebook and Google are the internet giants and they are sharing different news in the technological advancements. Now they have shared the internet connectivity to everyone on Planet Earth. The viewers have known about the Project Loon and others and they use everything from drones to the air balloons so that they can bring internet to the remote areas of the planet. Now these plans are becoming one step closer to bring reality.

Enter OpenCellular – An Open Source Wireless Access Platform

The CEO, Mark Zukerberg has announced the start of OpenCellular platform to provide the internet connectivity to about 4 billion people, who are without it. This is the open source system and anyone can tinker with it to open and facebook cannot control it solely and it can address the massive number of its critics. It has the size of the shoebox and he stated that it can support about 1500 people within the distance of 10 kilometers.

 

Anyone can use this shoebox sized gizmo, which they can get from telecom companies, researchers and entrepreneurs. There is restriction on the access to internet and it has startups, which can be modified so that it can provide services to the users.

How Will OpenCellular Work?

Mark Zuckerberg also stated that internet connectivity is offered with facebook with the box-sized hardware and it is provided with solar powered aircraft, Aquila. Such drones are added with high band width laser beams, which can connect the people with the internet. These boxes are installed at the towers or poles.

 

When this system is open, so various other countries can use aircrafts, existing infrastructure and networking mechanisms like cellular towers to provide internet in the remote areas. The clients can get strength of OpenCellular in both in high bandwidth feature and range. The cost of OpenCellular is not disclosed and also its industry standards but Mark will give more updates to us in the coming days.
