The Federal Government has reduced the rate of import duty on the import of the new smart phones from Rs.1000 to Rs.650. The government announced the annual budget of the federal government for the year 2017-2018 on 26 May 2017 and the Finance Minister has announced that the import of the import duty on the new smart phone has been reduced to Rs.650.

The federal government wants to increase the import of the new smart phones in the country for which they are encouraging the businessmen to import more and more smart phones in the country. It was mentioned that there were three categories of the smart phones, which are given as under:

• Feature Phone – Import duty Rs.300
• Low end smart phone – Import duty rs.650 (Previous import duty was Rs.1000/-).
• High end smart phone – Import duty Rs.1500/-

It is noted that the import duty for the two categories of the handset will remain same. It is mentioned that the import duty of the smart phone was increased from Rs.500 to Rs.1500 with in previous two years and it has been slashed partially.
