The trial services for 3G were started by cellular operators in Pakistan for over 1 month. Cellular operators, expect Zong, are expanding 3G technology for their customers in other areas while starting from Karachi, Rawalpindi/Islamabad and Lahore.

Availability of 3G services in minimum 5 cities (including provincial and federal capital) is made obligatory by PTA for all 3G operators by 9 months of launch of 3G.

Currently it seems that the operators are ahead of fulfilling their obligation long before deadline i.e. just over 1 month pass.

During the first few weeks, Ufone is clearly ahead of others by expanding 3G network live across three provinces of Pakistan in nine cities. The nine cities are given below where Ufone 3G services are available now.

  • Islamabad
  • Lahore
  • Rawalpindi
  • Karachi
  • Peshawar
  • Faisalabad
  • Multan
  • Gujranwala
  • Sialkot

In commercial launch of 3G, Ufone excel from other operators that shows its readiness for taking this 3G network seriously. It is also known that their quality is superb in the covered areas with 3G network.

They have taken their network even to those areas which are untouched by other cellular companies. These include cities like Gujranwala and Sialkot as they’re receiving 3G network only from Ufone.

Given below is the list of 8 cities where 3G services from Mobilink are present;

  • Islamabad
  • Rawalpindi
  • Peshawar
  • Lahore
  • Karachi
  • Multan
  • Faisalabad
  • Quetta

The specialty of Mobilink is that it is offering its 3G network in capital of Baluchistan, Quetta. It is the area where no other cellular company is so far providing 3G services.

The trial services of Telenor are underway in four cities of the country while it will launch its commercial 3G services from 1st of June 2014. The four cities receiving 3G through Telenor are:

  • Islamabad
  • Lahore
  • Rawalpindi
  • Peshawar

Telecom companies are working hard to cover the entire cities with 3G network in which they’re present as whole cities are so far not under coverage of 3G. It seems they will complete their service entirely soon. Several years are required for these companies to expand their network in whole country for sure.

The absence of Zong is very surprising as they’ll start launching their 3G networks commercially from mid-July and so far, only few areas of Lahore are receiving their trial 3G services.
