With the passage of time, the technology changes every day. Camera was invented in the early 19th century and since then the basic blueprint for camera remained same and it is the same even today with the use of conventional round lenses of cameras.

Introducing the Metalens

But due to a new type of lens “Metalens”, it will soon change. This lens performs quite better as compared to current lens as this lens is extremely thin and flat.

A thin layer of transparent quartz with nano-pillars on top are used to made this lens and the light is focused when it passes between these nano-pillars. Its picture quality is far better than conventional cameras as it rearranges and focuses the beam of light.

Compared with Traditional Camera Lenses

Metalens can perform better than older optics as they free from problems faced by the traditional lenses like trading sharpness for visual artifacts on the side.

Senior author Federico Capasso says that this lens is a revolutionary one due to its quality. Traditional lenses are based on the technology of 19th Century but these modern lenses are made in the factories which prepare computer chips. It means same technology is used for these lenses.

When is Metalens Expected to Enter the Mainstream?

Through current technology, cheap production of metalenses is possible while several other materials can also be used with this technology.

As compared to other expensive revolutionary advances, the metalens will prove to eb quite different due to conventional wisdom. We can expect a new era of camera technology with these lenses.
