Recently Google has informed that a now- fixed camera app can make easily allowed third party application to access to the camera of Smart phones with storage media like images and videos.

After a security research made by the team of cyber security experts at Checkmarx it was declared. In past the same team uncovered such harmful and risky threats with Amazon’s Alexa and Tinder. The newest discovery was found affecting Google and Samsung smart phones.

The researchers were known that Smart phone camera can also be accessed, when a third- party application is allowed to access storage. The hackers can easily steal the user’s phones record like videos and images. Hackers can also easily get access to geolocation data which is embedded in stored photos as well.

Checkmarx researchers said:

“Unfortunately, storage permissions are very broad and these permissions give access to the entire SD card. There are a large number of applications, with legitimate use-cases, that request access to this storage, yet have no special interest in photos or videos. In fact, it’s one of the most common requested permissions observed”

To create proof of concept, the researchers created a funny weather application. The application only requested basic storage permissions to the users. With permission, the app managed to record photos and videos on the victim’s Smart phone.

Google Camera Apps

The error was reported to Google’s Android security team on July 4, and the remaining vendors were notified in August. Google returned a patch file for the issue shortly after it was reported, however there is a high likelihood that users from other vendors (other than Google and Samsung) are still receiving updates. Due to the wider Android ecosystem, millions of Smart phone users may face significant implications.
