Huawei has surprised us once again with the sudden unveiling of its latest smartphone, the Mate X5. This device serves as a direct successor to the Mate X3, offering significant under-the-hood enhancements while maintaining a similar design.
The Mate X5 retains its impressive 7.85-inch LTPO OLED main display and 6.4-inch LTPO OLED cover display with Kunlun Glass protection. It now introduces a new Phantom Purple color option, joining the existing Feather White, Feather Black, Feather Gold, and Green Mountain choices from the Mate X3 lineup.
While the camera island on the back sees slight design tweaks, the camera configuration remains unchanged. It includes a 50MP main camera with an f/1.8 aperture, a 13MP f/2.2 ultrawide unit, and a 12MP f/3.4 periscope module with 5x optical zoom.
The Mate X5 offers an impressive 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. Although Huawei hasn’t officially confirmed the chipset, reports suggest it may feature the Kirin 9000s SoC, as seen in the Mate 60 series, with 5G capabilities and built on SMIC’s 7nm process technology.
Notably, the Mate X5 showcases an all-new antenna design, promising improved signal reception. Huawei’s Lingxi antenna incorporates AI algorithms to optimize network connectivity. The device’s frame also boasts dual-mode tuning technology for enhanced signal quality.
Additionally, the Mate X5 houses a larger 5,060mAh battery and supports 66W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, and 7.5W reverse wireless charging. It runs on HarmonyOS 4 and introduces innovative air gesture controls, allowing users to navigate through content without touching the main display. The device is also IPX8 waterproof and supports two-way BeiDou satellite messaging in China.
For those eager to get their hands on the Mate X5, it’s currently available for pre-sale on VMall, with open sales set to commence on September 15.
