Today, Sony took the wraps off its latest compact flagship smartphone, the Xperia 5 V. This new addition boasts a revamped camera system, albeit without a telephoto unit, but it compensates with a significantly larger main sensor.
The Xperia 5 V retains its familiar 6.1-inch FHD+ 120Hz 21:9 OLED display, surrounded by front-firing stereo speakers for an immersive audiovisual experience.
Under the hood, Sony equips the Xperia 5 V with the cutting-edge Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, along with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. If you need more space, there’s an option to expand storage through the microSD card slot.
For those who cherish the 3.5mm headphone jack, Sony has preserved it for yet another year, a rarity in the modern smartphone landscape.
Turning our attention to the rear camera setup, there’s a noticeable change. Sony has transitioned from a triple camera configuration to a dual-camera system, but with a notably superior main sensor. The Xperia 5 V now sports the same impressive 1/1.35-inch 52MP main sensor as its predecessor, the Xperia 1 V. By default, it captures 24mm 12MP shots. Notably, the larger sensor size and enhanced optics mean that even when you opt for the 2x zoom (effectively 48mm), you’ll experience better light capture than the Xperia 5 IV telephoto camera.
The second rear camera is a 12MP 1/2.5-inch ultrawide lens with a 16mm focal length, seemingly identical to the one found in the Xperia 1 V and last year’s Xperia 5 IV. It boasts dual-pixel autofocus capabilities.
On the front, a 12MP 1/2.9-inch camera handles selfies, maintaining the standard set in the previous model.
Despite its 6.1-inch screen and tall aspect ratio, the Xperia 5 V retains its compact form factor. While it has gained 11 grams in weight and is slightly thicker than its predecessor, it remains marginally shorter. Transitioning from an Xperia 1 V, users will appreciate the Xperia 5 V’s compactness. It enters a market of diminishing compact flagships and will compete with rivals like Samsung’s Galaxy S23 and Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro.
The battery capacity remains at 5,000mAh, but thanks to the upgraded Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC, Sony anticipates improved battery life. The company claims you can achieve a 50% charge in just 30 minutes with its 30W charger (sold separately).
The Sony Xperia 5 V is expected to hit the market in late September, with a expected price tag of PKR 3,25,000/.
